The Government is reviewing old statutes in a bid streamline the law-books, and that could see local councils' obligations to provide allotments - set down in 1908 - lifted.
The 1908 Smallholdings and Allotments Act section 23 is one of 1,294 statutory duties under review by the Communities department.
The Government is reviewing duties imposed on councils to free them from red tape but claims it will not remove statutory protections for allotments.
The assurance has not stopped a number of people launching petitions and canpaigns to prevent the removal of the act.
