Society consider's half-plot allocation change move

11/7/2011

Paignton Home Garden and Allotment Society has discussed a proposal to rescind the decision to hand out half instead of full-size plots.

For several months the society has been divinding plots in half as they become available and offering the new plots to two instead of one applicant.

This has helped reduce the waiting list and is becomign common practice by allotment societys and master landlords - including Torbay Council.

But some new plotholders have stated that the half-size plot is not big enough for their requirements.

A possible proposal to rescind the half-plot move was briefly discussed at the society's meeting in August.

The committee agreed that some plotholders may find a half-size plot is not enough, but they also said that the waiting list remains substantial.

The committee decided to undertake a full review of the waiting list to determine exactly how many people are waiting, and how long they are waiting.

The committee is also investigating ways of managing its database more effectively to keep a closer tarck of the state of plots and letters sent to plot-holders - which could in tunr increase the speed at which unused plots are brought back into use by new plotholders.

Green manure bulk buying proposal

11/7/2011

The allotment society is considering a proposal to bulk buy green manure later this year.

Gren manure is seeds which can be sown across a plot after harvesting to maintain nutrients and water while suppressing weeds.

It is then dug into the soil before planting.

Recent bulk buying of chicken manure pellets was a success.

Plotholders may be surveyed before the move in a bid to determine demand.

10 letters to plotholders warning of poor state of their land

10 letters are to be sent to plotholders on Oakleigh St Michael warning them their plots are not up to standard.

A number of plotholders are failing to keep their plots clean and will be issued with letters this month.

Depending on the state of their plots and the length of time they have been substandard the nature of the letters will vary.

Some will receive 'dirty plot' warnings calling for improvement, some will be given seven days to improve or vacate, others will be asked their intentions and whether they need help.

Site representatives for Lower Penns and Derrell Road have reproted no problem plots currently outstanding.

The society's July meeting heard there is a substantial list of people waiting for plots, with some new holders claiming they have been waiting for five years.
