Rising water costs could push up rents

2/8/2011

The increasing use of water and the increasing prices could see rents for allotments pushed up to cover the costs.

Water use at the three sites, especially Lower Penns, has been repeatedly discussed at recent society meetings.

The society heard that this year's dry weather has seen water use increase, with one quarterly bill for Lower Penns now at least £30 higher than the same time last year.

The August meeting briefly discussed raising rents to cover the costs.

The society heard that rents have not been increased since the society took over managing the plots two to three years ago.

Water use and costs will continue to be monitored and rents for next year will be set at the October meeting.

The society is to bulk buy seeds at £3 for a kilo of vetch and a kilo of rye, and sell it on for £3.25 - with profits going in to society funds.

Plotholders are asked to rgister an interest with their site reps, and the quantities will be agree at the end of the month.

Work to repair and replace taps at Oakleigh St Michaels allotment site is ongoing.

Water has been leaking from the site's taps and the fittings are being replaced.

Earlier meetings of the society have approved work on the taps and the August meeting heard work is being done, but the fittings are not standard.

Work should be completed in the next few weeks.

The August meeting also agreed on replacing the padlock on Oakleigh's gate.
